24-30 June 2019
Launched in 2013, Negroni Week now has around 10,000 bars all over the world taking part and has raised upwards of $2 million for charitable causes.
The 2019 Negroni Week is extra special as it is celebrating the 100th birthday of the Negroni itself!
The legend has it that the Negroni was created in Florence when Count Camillo Negroni asked bartender Fosco Scarselli, to strengthen his favorite cocktail, the Americano, by adding gin rather than the normal soda water. The bartender also added an orange garnish rather than the typical lemon garnish of the Americano to signify that it was a different drink. It quickly gained popularity throughout Europe in the 1920s, and a century later it’s the second most ordered drink in the world for five years in a row.
Every bar that signs up to Negroni Week nominates a charity to raise money for and this year, Lockside Camden is delighted to be raising money for Water for People. 2.1 billion people around the world don’t have access to safe water and 4.5 billion lack access to adequate sanitation. Women and children spend more than four hours walking for water each day, and more than 840,000 people die each year from water-related diseases.
